Spirit Lantern

Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement)

This small bullseye lantern is made of silver and is sometimes shaped like a devil-head, with the lamp in the gaping mouth. It casts bright light in a 30-foot cone and dim light for an additional 30 feet. As an action, you can speak the command word while shining the light on a humanoid you choose that is either stunned, unconscious, or asleep. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw or have its soul snatched out of its body and trapped in the lantern.

While a soul remains trapped in the lantern, the body enters a stasis so long as it remains within the light of the lantern. In this state, the body does not require food or drink to survive, though it continues to breathe and age. If the body is removed from the light of the lantern, it begins to dehydrate and dies within 1d4 days.

The lantern light projects an image of the person it has trapped. The soul controls the movements of the image and can see anyone that can see it, though the image can’t hear or speak. The person who is attuned to the lantern can, however, communicate telepathically with the trapped soul, so long as they are holding the lantern.

The soul remains trapped in the lantern for as long as the lantern is lit. Once lit, it burns for 8 hours on a flask (1 pint) of oil. The lantern can be refueled while it is lit.
